A Day Out at Run Free Winchburgh

reviewed by our rov(er)ing reporter Topsy the Lurcher!

Hello readers! I’m Topsy, the lurcher with legs made for running, and I’ve been out on assignment at Run Free Winchburgh. I took my doggy family – Towser and Teaghan – along for the fun, because everything’s better when you’ve got friends to chase.

Arrival and first impressions

Run Free Winchburgh is easy to find and in a handy central location, so it’s great whether you’re coming from Edinburgh, Linlithgow, or even Fife. There’s a large parking area with space for several cars and secure loading bays beside each field.

The fields

There are two fields to choose from at Winchburgh:

Champany field

This field has play equipment for us dogs plus a shelter and picnic table for humans to sit and admire us in action. It’s perfect for practising tricks, chasing balls, or in my case, jumping over the equipment instead of using it properly. Towser loves fetching the ball here, and Teaghan likes to climb up and balance on the dog walk like a pro. He’s much better at that bit than me.  I prefer to keep my paws moving fast and fly over things instead.

Philipstoun field

This one is larger and L-shaped, with plenty of open space for high-speed running. Some of the grass is left longer, which gives loads of extra sniffs and makes it great fun for chasing through. It’s ideal for when I want to explore or need space to burn off serious energy.

Our visit

We started our adventure in Champany field.

Towser immediately insisted on a few rounds of fetch while Teaghan explored the play equipment. He trotted confidently up the dog walk, balanced along it, then bounded down the ramp like he owned the place. I tried to copy him, but leaping straight over everything is much more my style. We did a few sprints between the jumps, with Towser proudly bringing the ball back every time (well, most of the time).

After a quick drink and a breather under the shelter, we headed over to Philipstoun field for some proper running.

This is where I really came into my own. Long stretches of grass, space to run, and plenty of smells to investigate. Teaghan chased me in circles until we were both panting, while Towser zoomed through the longer grass in hot pursuit of his ball. Every now and then, we’d all stop for a sniff. The longer grass holds so many interesting scents, it’s like reading the doggy news.

By the time we were finished, all three of us were tired, happy, and ready for a nap on the drive home.

Why we loved it

Safe and secure fencing, so we could all run freely without any worry.

Big enough for zoomies, fetch, and games of chase.

The play equipment gives variety for dogs who like a challenge.

The shelter and picnic table make it comfy for humans too.

Easy access and plenty of parking.

Topsy’s tips

Bring your dog’s favourite ball or toy to make the most of the open space.

Try both fields – Champany for play and equipment fun, Philipstoun for proper running and sniffing adventures.

Don’t forget plenty of treats for a well-earned reward afterwards.

Final verdict

Run Free Winchburgh gets top marks from me and my gang. Whether you want to race, play, climb, or just stretch your legs safely, it’s got everything a dog could wish for. We left tired and very happy, which is exactly how every good adventure should end.

Until next time!
