A Day Out at Run Free Lochwinnoch

reviewed by our rov(er)ing reporter Topsy the Lurcher

Hello readers! I’m Topsy, the lurcher with legs built for speed and curiosity built for trouble, and I’ve been out on assignment at Run Free Lochwinnoch. I took my doggy family Towser and Teaghan along for the adventure, and we were joined by our friends Sophie and Sweetie, because the more the merrier when there’s a new field to explore.

Arrival and first impressions

Run Free Lochwinnoch sits in a lovely rural Renfrewshire setting just off the A737, surrounded by open farmer’s fields. It feels like a proper countryside escape where dogs can switch off from everything else and focus on the important things, like running very fast and sniffing absolutely everything.

Parking is in a secure loading bay right beside the field, which makes arrival easy and means the fun can start straight away. There’s also a fantastic coffee van in the car park. I’m not sure why humans need fancy warm drinks before zoomies, but they seem very enthusiastic about it.

The field

Roadhead field is a spacious enclosed field with gentle slopes, open grassy areas, and play and enrichment equipment for climbing, balancing, and exploring. It works brilliantly for dogs who love to run, dogs who love to think, and dogs who just love doing everything at full speed.

One of the best features is the stream that runs along the bottom edge of the field. Most of it sits beyond the fence, but there’s a section where we dogs can safely access the water.  More on that later!

Our visit

We started up on the main field where Towser and Sophie immediately got a game of fetch going. Sophie is just as enthusiastic as Towser when a ball appears, and the two of them turned it into a high speed chase session from the very beginning.

Teaghan headed off to the play equipment, moving steadily through each piece and clearly enjoying working his way across it. Sweetie wandered alongside the action, happily exploring at her own pace and checking in on whatever caught her interest.

I spent most of my time doing what I do best, which is running in big loops around everyone else and occasionally joining in whatever looked like the most fun at that exact moment.

After a while we all headed towards the stream area. Towser tried to involve the ball in the water situation, which wasn’t the cleverest idea.  Sophie and I enjoyed a good play in the stream, Teaghan carefully took a drink from the edge, while Sweetie enjoyed watching safely from the bank.

It’s the kind of place where every dog naturally finds their own way to enjoy it, whether that’s running, climbing and playing, or splashing in the stream.

By the end we were all happily worn out and ready for a very quiet drive home.

Why we loved it

Loads of space to really stretch out and run
Play equipment that keeps things interesting
The stream area that’s a brilliant bonus for splashing, paddling and cooling off
A coffee van nearby to keep the humans happy

Topsy’s tips

Bring a ball if you have a Towser or Sophie type dog, they will absolutely put it to good use
Give dogs time to explore the stream area properly, it’s one of the best parts of the field
Let each dog do their own thing, there’s plenty of space for different personalities to enjoy it their way
Don’t underestimate the human joy of having access to coffee and cake

Final verdict

Roadhead field at Run Free Lochwinnoch gets a very enthusiastic paws up from me and my gang. It’s a brilliant open space with something for every kind of dog, whether they are top speed racers, thoughtful explorers, or easy-going sniffers and splashers. We left tired, happy, and already talking about the next visit.

Until next time
